LayersA quick-drying synthetic thermal base (no cotton), fleece, and a waterproof jacket and trousers. In Patagonia you can get all four seasons in one day.
FootwearWaterproof trekking boots that are already broken in, and wool-blend socks. Wear in your boots before the trip.
Backpack35 to 40 liters for day hikes; 40 to 60 liters for winter or camping.
Trekking polesTrekking poles help on descents and on rocky or snowy sections.
SunSunglasses with a strap, a cap or hat, and sunscreen of at least SPF 30 for face and lips.
WaterA refillable bottle or hydration system. If the water is not safe, carry a filter or purification tablets.
Camping and hutsA 3 to 4 season sleeping bag, a light sleeping pad, a headlamp with spare batteries and a personal first-aid kit.

Mountain trails require good fitness and trekking footwear.
Bring layers, a waterproof jacket, and enough water and food: there are few services on the route.
